§ Mr. WallaceTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to make any resources available to education authorities in Scotland to promote the teaching of modern languages in primary schools; and if he will make a statement.
§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton[holding answer 19 April 19931: Funds of £1.45 million have been allocated in this financial year, as the first stage of our major initiative to extend the teaching of modern languages into primary schools throughout Scotland; £450,000 of that allocation forms part of the specific grant available to education authorities for the in-service training of teachers in 1993–94. The funding provided will allow training packages to be prepared and substantial numbers of primary teachers to begin the courses that will enable them to teach modern languages in their schools.
