HC Deb 01 April 1993 vol 222 c396W
Rev. William McCrea

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people have been killed by(a) republican paramilitaries and (b) loyalist paramilitaries over the last 20 years; and if he will give details by constituency.

Mr. Mates

From the information available it is believed that over 2,600 people have been killed as a result of the actions of terrorist organisations in Northern Ireland during the period from 1969 to 1992. It is not known in every case precisely which paramilitary organisation was responsible, but it is likely that 69 per cent. of deaths involved republican groups and 31 per cent. involved loyalist groups. It is not possible to provide this information by constituency without disproportionate cost.
