47. Mr. Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action his Department is taking in relation to the drought in southern Africa; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

My noble Friend, the Minister for Overseas Development, has so far committed more than £51 million of bilateral aid in response to the drought in southern Africa. Taking into account our share of the EC special food aid programme, estimated at £11.3 million, this brings our overall response to around £63 million.
