HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 cc195-6W
Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will state the number of million tonne miles of coal carried by railways and coastal and inland shipping in or around the United Kingdom in 1990 and 1991, and his estimate of the amount likely to be carried thereafter, following implementation of the current plans for reduced use of coal.

Mr. Freeman

Statistics of coal and coke movements in 1990 and 1991 are given in table 1.9 of Transport Statistics Great Britain 1992, which was published in September. The figures for rail and water, including coastal and inland waterway movements, are as follows:

Billion tonne-kilometres
1990 1991
Rail 5.0 15.0
Water 1.4 21.7
1 1991–92 financial year
2provisional

It is for British Rail Trainload Freight and the shipping industry to make their own estimates of the amount of coal and coke they expect to carry.
