HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c196W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what action is currently undertaken by his Department to encourage car manufacturers to take into account the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists when designing their cars.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

The United Kingdom is at the forefront of moves within Europe to make the fronts of cars less harmful to pedestians, cyclists and motorcyclists in the event of a collision and is currently co-operating in the drafting of an EC directive. The Government welcome the fact that manufacturers are already incorporating in their cars some of the measures which are proposed in the directive and hope that they will be able to move further in this direction.
