HC Deb 26 November 1992 vol 214 c817W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what proportion of the timber imported from the Philippines is categorised as(a) rough sawn and raw logs and (b) semi-manufactured; what criteria his Department uses to make such categorisations; what differences there are between United Kingdom criteria and Philippine criteria; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Needham

Rough-sawn and raw logs accounted for 1.3 per cent of total timber imports from the Philippines in 1991. Semi-manufactured timber accounted for 98.7 per cent. of imports over the same period.

The United Kingdom statistics follow the United Nations' standard international trade classification system which is also used by the Philippines.
