HC Deb 11 November 1992 vol 213 cc793-4W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (I) how much money is currently allocated by the Overseas Development Administration to assist drought-affected areas of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and what is the total tonnage of cereals which has been pledged to date to each country by the United Kingdom;.

(2) what is the timetable for the delivery of pledges granted by the Overseas Development Administration to the draught-affected areas of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have pledged and fully disbursed £10 million each to Zambia and Zimbabwe in balance of payments grants to help with the cost of additional imports, including food, for drought relief. We are also providing £804,000 for Zambia and £2.475 million for Zimbabwe to assist with emergency water schemes and food distribution.

Apart from small amounts through these ongoing projects, we are not providing food aid directly on a bilateral basis. However, the EC has committed 100,000 tonnes for Zambia and 80,000 tonnes for Zimbabwe this year, mainly in cereal form. We expect this to be delivered over the next 10 weeks. Britain's share of the cost is about £5.5 million.
