To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of redundancies in the south-west in the last quarter for which figures are available.

Mr. McLoughlin

Data on redundancies are obtained from the labour force survey, the confirmed redundancy series having been discontinued. Estimates from the spring 1992 labour force survey show that, in the three months prior to the survey, 25,000 people were made redundant in the south-west.
