To ask the Parliamentary Secretary to the Lord Chancellor's Department what steps the Lord Chancellor takes to ensure geographical representation for the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom in the appointment of social security commissioners.

Most cases are determined on paper but commissioners sit regularly in all four regions of the United Kingdom when a particular case requires them to do so.

To ensure that only the best candidates are appointed, ability and experience, rather than regional origin, are the criteria for appointment as a social security commissioner.
