To ask the Parliamentary Secretary to the Lord Chancellor's Department what is the current expenditure on legal aid; and what it was 10 years ago.

After the recovery of contributions, the estimated outturn of expenditure on legal aid in 1991–92 is £969 million, inclusive of administration costs. Expenditure in 1981–82 was £170 million net.
