To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will take action to restrict imports of footwear from China into the United Kingdom.

Mr. Needham

My Department is currently considering a proposal from the European Commission to introduce a Community wide quantitative restriction for the rest of this year on imports of certain types of footwear from China. Such a measure, if agreed, would replace the differing national quotas which most member states—including the UK— presently apply to direct imports from there.
