HL Deb 14 July 1992 vol 539 c13WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they expect that the UK will be taking part in the placing of UN peace observers in the Republic of Moldavia, as agreed by the Presidents of Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Moldavia in Istanbul on 25th June.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Agreement was reached at the Commonwealth of Independent States Summit on 6th July to send a peacekeeping force from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Romania and Bulgaria to Moldova. The communiqué issued in Istanbul by the Presidents of Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova on 25th June said that a more active peacekeeping role by the UN in the dispute would be welcomed. The UN Secretary-General sent a fact-finding mission to the region on 27th June. Any further UN involvement will be considered in the light of its report.
