To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many staff his Department currently employs; what are the total personnel costs; and what were the staffing levels and personnel costs in 1970.

A total of 12,214 staff were employed in the Department of Trade and Industry on 1 June 1992. The planned expenditure on pay for 1992–93 is £254.2 million.

Details of the staffing levels of the Department of Trade and Industry at its creation on 15 October 1970 are not readily available. The manpower provision of the Department's constituent parts six and a half months earlier, at 1 April 1970, totalled 26,483 with a pay provision for 1970–71 of £53.5 million.
