HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 c434W
Ms. Jowell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the latest information he has on the mass rape in Ujan Maidan village, West Tripura, by members of the Assam Rifles, during a cordon and search operation in the district between 31 May and 2 June 1988; and what information he has about investigations into the circumstances of the women's rape and measures taken to bring those responsible to justice.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

An Indian commission of inquiry into this incident submitted its report in December 1991. This confirmed that at least eight tribal women in Ujan Maidan had been raped by soldiers of the Assam Rifles. We do not know how or whether those responsible were punished and have asked the Indian Government for information.
