Which of the states of the former Soviet Union have already become, or are expected shortly to become, members of the United Nations, of the CSCE process, or of the Council of Europe.
The Earl of CaithnessRussia as the continuing state of the Soviet Union has taken on former Soviet membership or commitments in respect of all those organisations. Ukraine and Belarus are original members of the United Nations. Applications from other republics will be considered under normal UN procedures. So far Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kirgizstan have applied. We shall welcome into the CSCE process all former republics which accept its principles and commitments and demonstrate a determination to respect them. There is no immediate prospect of the former republics becoming members of the Council of Europe.
