§ Mr. Home RobertsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the deployment of military personnel at Windsor castle following the recent fire; what charges are being made for the cost of those services; and by whom they will be met.
§ Mr. Archie HamiltonDuring the fire and the immediate aftermath, in addition to men from the Windsor castle guard, some 200 soldiers from the Household Cavalry regiment were deployed to assist in removal of precious artifacts to a place of safety. Once the fire had been extinguished, soldiers assisted with the transfer of the previously removed objects back to their proper locations. During the period when members of the castle guard were providing assistance, the guard was reinforced with men from the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles. Apart from charges which are being raised to cover the cost of meals provided for firemen at Combermere barracks, no charges are being raised for this assistance.
