HC Deb 09 December 1992 vol 215 cc714-6W
Mr. Raynsford

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence when he last published accounts for Greenwich hospital trust; and when he will make available a copy of the next available accounts.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Greenwich hospital's accounts for 1990–91 were ordered to be printed on 23 January 1992 and published accordingly by HMSO as House of Commons paper No. 203 of 1991–92. The 1991–92 accounts are nearing completion with a view to presentation to the House early in 1993.

Mr. Raynsford

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if the appointment of Hunters to act as agents for Greenwich hospital trust was subject to competitive tendering; and when the contract was last put out to tender.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

No. In 1968, Mr. D. C. Hunter, FRICS, was, with Admiralty Board approval, appointed manager of the hospital's Greenwich estate. In 1986, with the approval of the Greenwich hospital advisory panel, the appointment was transferred to Mr. Hunter's firm, Hunters, for a three-year trial period, with Mr. Hunter retaining responsibility for overall supervision of Greenwich hospital's interests. Although Mr. Hunter formally retired in 1989, he continues to act as a consultant to the firm. After the end of the trial period, the arrangement was reviewed and it was decided that existing contractual arrangements should continue.

Mr. Raynsford

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what consultation was undertaken with commercial tenants of Greenwich hospital trust about the appointment of the trust's agents to handle matters relating to the commercial leases held for the trust.

Available records do not indicate whether such consultation was undertaken. It is not normal commercial practice for a landlord to consult tenants before appointing an agent.
