§ Mr. Ron Brown
To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether Scottish Homes has sought statutory powers for the compulsory purchase of its former properties in the constituency of Leith; and if he will make a statement.
§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton
Under section 2(2)(g) of the Housing (Scotland) Act 1988, Scottish Homes have the power to acquire land compulsorily but that power may be exercised only in accordance with arrangements made between the agency and the Secretary of State. My right hon. Friend has not been asked by Scottish Homes to consider arrangements for the compulsory purchase of properties in the hon. Member's constituency.
