Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much aid has been given to Guyana in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Mrs. Chalker

Following are the figures:

£ million
1988 0.6
1989 6.6
1990 15.3

Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the threat to the greenheart tree in Guyana.

Mrs. Chalker

No such assessment has been made. Since October 1990 the bilateral aid programme has been financing a three-year research programme by Imperial college which is looking at the major problems concerning the regeneration of greenheart and other commercial timber species.

Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much the Guyanese Timber Company has received in World bank grants.

Mrs. Chalker

The World Bank approved a $10 million loan in October 1978 and a supplementary IDA loan of SDR8.7 million ($8.8 million) in March 1985 to the Government of Guyana for the Upper Demerara forestry project. A state-owned company, Demerara Woods, was set up to manage the project.
