Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what will be(a) the initial costs and (b) the annual running costs of confidential inquiries into stillbirths and infant deaths in England; and what additional funds he is making available to (i) the Department of Health, (ii) the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, (iii) regional health authorities and (iv) district health authorities to (a) set up and (b) run the inquiries.

[holding answer 5 November 1991]: Initial costs in regions of setting up epidemiological surveys of stillbirths and infant deaths and of recruiting additional perinatal pathologists are already being met from current allocations. Details of further expenditure are under consideration. As the confidential inquiry will be part of the NHS reforms audit initiative, regions will be
