HC Deb 06 November 1991 vol 198 cc182-3W
Miss Lestor

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps he has taken to ensure that the recommendations of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy report "Dietary Sugars and Human Disease" (1989) are implemented.

Mr. Dorrell

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave her on 30 January at column529. Work continues on all fronts mentioned.

In July this year the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy published its report "Dietary Reference Values for Food Energy and Nutrients for the UK", in which it fully endorsed the findings in the 1989 report; a copy is available in the Library. It advised that the population's average intake of non-milk extrinsic sugars should not exceed about 60 g per day or 10 per cent. of total dietary energy. The Health Education Authority is now working in close co-operation with officials of the Department of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to translate this advice into further nutrition education material.
