To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on progress towards self-governing trust status for hospitals in Mid-Essex.

Mr. Dorrell

I am happy to report that the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS trust was established on 1 November and will become fully operational on 1 April 1992. The unit has an excellent record and I am sure that it will use its new freedoms to bring even greater benefits to its patients.
