Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list, by ranks from police constable to chief constable, the number of male and female police officers employed in each police force; if he has any proposals to increase the proportion of woman officers in the more senior positions; and if he will make a statement.

The following table lists, for those subsidiaries sold so far, the names of the purchasers, indicating those which were management-employee buy-outs. Sale prices will be published only after privatisation of all SBG subsidiaries has been completed.

The latest available information is set out in the table. Promotions up to chief superintendent level are a matter for the chief constable concerned. Appointments at assistant chief constable and above are for the police authority, subject to the approval of my right hon. Friend. The Department intends to issue a circular shortly which will seek to carry forward the development of equal opportunities policies in the police service.
