HC Deb 25 March 1991 vol 188 cc313-4W
Mr. Sumberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer of 21 February,Official Report, column 195, what were the reasons for rejection of the alternative solutions to the problems of congestion on the M62 motorway.

Mr. Chope

Widening of the existing motorway is only an interim measure as it will not increase capacity sufficiently to meet projections in traffic growth. Limiting access to the motorway for local traffic would severely increase congestion on local roads. Although public transport—including rail—makes an important contribution it cannot fulfil the needs of more than a small proportion of private and business road users.
