HC Deb 19 March 1991 vol 188 cc97-8W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what records he keeps concerning the location of sites used for the burial or other disposal of farm animals which die or are destroyed as a result of the outbreak of notifiable disease; and whether any constraints are placed on the subsequent use of such sites.

Mr. Maclean

My Department records the location of premises where outbreaks of certain notifiable diseases, such as foot and mouth disease, which require the compulsory slaughter of animals, occur. It also keeps information on anthrax outbreaks, including the method of disposal of carcases and burial sites.

It is illegal to dig up any buried carcase, except under licence from this Department, but if a burial pit is uncovered accidentally, the local divisional veterinary officer will make arrangements for the safe removal and disposal of the remains.
