HC Deb 19 March 1991 vol 188 c97W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what consultations he has entered into with farmers' unions and professional organisations prior to his decision to close the veterinary investigation centre in Bangor, north Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

The review of the veterinary investigation service which my right hon. Friend the Minister commissioned was an internal review. Initial discussions were held with the trade unions and during the period of the review views were submitted from a number of interested parties, including the British Veterinary Association and the National Farmers Unions. These views were carefully considered before any final decisions were taken.

We believe that the implementation of these recommendations of the review team will result in significant improvements in the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the veterinary investigation service. This is important if we are to have a VI service which is well equipped to meet our national needs over the years ahead.
