Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will list the location of the incinerators used for the disposal of BSE cows on a county basis in England; if he will list those counties where there are no such facilities; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he will list on a county basis in England the number of BSE confirmed cows which were (a) incinerated and (b) buried in 1990 and the most recent figures for 1991; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

The movement of carcases of suspect BSE cattle for incineration or burial is carried out on an England and Wales basis and is not restricted by county boundaries. Currently there are 10 incinerators in England used to handle BSE carcases. These are located in Avon, Hertfordshire, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. in 1990 11,824 carcases were incinerated and 2,707 buried in England. The figures for the first quarter of 1991 are not yet available.
