§ Mr. William RossTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many commercial fishing engines operate in freshwater lakes and rivers in England and Wales which have as target species(a) salmon, (b) sea 567W trout, (c) wild brown trout and (d) coarse fish by species; and what quantities of each such species were taken by such engines in (i) 1990, (ii) 1985, (iii) 1980 and (iv) 1970.
§ Mr. CurryI understand that there are five rivers in England and Wales—the Avon, Lyn, Conwy, Eden and Derwent—in which commercial fixed engines in fresh-water have been licensed for catching salmon or sea trout. (There are no such licensed fixed engines in lakes, nor fixed engines whose target species are wild brown trout or coarse fish). The available data on the numbers of fish caught by these methods for the Rivers Avon, Lyn and Conwy are as follows:
River A von River Lyn River Conwy Salmon Sea trout Salmon Sea trout Salmon Sea trout 1970 103 0 33 80 58 11 1980 22 33 17 1 8 6 1985 87 73 0 0 37 0 11989 205 134 0 0 0 0 1 1990 data not yet available. Separate data are not available for the fixed engine catches on the Eden and Derwent. Further information about salmon and freshwater fisheries catches over the period 1983–88 appears in the "Fisheries Research Data Report Series" published by the fisheries laboratory, Lowestoft.
