Mr. Gill

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make regulations under section 13 of the Education Act 1981 relating to the approval of independent schools to admit pupils with statements of special educational needs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Fallon

The Secretaries of State for Education and Science and for Wales have today laid such regulations before Parliament and issued related circulars. Copies have been placed in the Library.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he intends to lay amending regulations made under section 12 of the Education Act 1981 relating to the approval of special schools, on which he issued a draft for consultation; and if he will make a statement.

The Secretaries of State for Education and Science and Wales have today laid before Parliament regulations to amend the Education (Approval of Special Schools) Regulations 1983. The Department has also issued circular 3/91, which replaces circular 6/83 and explains the updated requirements for the approval of special schools. A copy has been placed in the Library.
