HC Deb 11 March 1991 vol 187 cc340-2W
Mr. Butterfill

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table showing the proportion of total education spending which is spent on the provision of central services in respect of each local education authority in England and Wales.

Mr. Fallon

The latest available information for England relates to LEA spending on central services for schools which are categorised as discretionary excepted items under local management of schools. The eighty-seven LEAs that introduced local management of schools in April 1990 have published budget statements for 1990–91 which show how much of the potential schools budget is withheld from schools to be spent on discretionary excepted items. The figure for each LEA is given in the table. Comparable information is not available for the FE or other education sectors. Information about Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
