Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his answers of 5 June 1990,Official Report, column 483, and 6 June 1991, Official Report, column 287, when his Department ceased to have a dedicated energy manager; and what other duties are carried out by the officials in the energy management unit.

Mr. Heseltine

[holding answer 18 June 1991]: Since September 1990 the work of my Department's energy management unit has been broadened to include other associated environmental issues as part of a policy of developing departmental practice which preserves and enhances the environment. Energy conservation remains a key element of the unit's work and the success of the unit is demonstrated by the reduction in departmental energy consumption reported in my reply to the hon. Member of 12 June 1991.
