§ Baroness Sharplesasked Her Majesty's Government:
What recent representations they have received from the African National Congress on sporting links with South Africa; and what response they have made.
The Earl of Caithness:The ANC have recently sought the British Government's support for the readmission of South Africa to the International Cricket Council. In reply, we have welcomed the formation this month of one non-racial United 72WA Cricket Board of South Africa. We have explained to the ANC that the Government does not control sport in this country, but that we were sure that the ICC would wish to take account of this development. Under the United Cricket Board, cricket in South Africa will comply with the terms of the Gleneagles Agreement and should resume its place in international sport. We hope that very soon South Africa will be re-admitted to international cricket. As other sports become non-racial, the same will apply to them.
