HL Deb 14 June 1991 vol 529 c71WA
Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they take to ensure that health and safety legislation emanating from the European Community is enforced in British Embassies throughout the European Community.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness):

The Treaty of Rome requires EC member states to implement EC legislation in domestic legislation where appropriate. Although the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, which effectively implemented the EC Workplace Directive, does not legally apply to the FCO estate overseas, British missions abroad are expected to comply with the substance of this legislation.
