HC Deb 06 June 1991 vol 192 c334W
16. Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proposals he has to modify the structure and control of police authorities.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

I have no plans to modify the structure and control of police authorities. The Government remain committed to the tripartite structure of our policing system and the value of local involvement. There are developments that we need in providing support to the police service and enhancing the delivery of policing as a local service, but these can be achieved using the flexibility of the Police Act 1964. This is the message I will be giving to the Association of Chief Police Officers in a speech tonight.
