To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, representing the Church Commissioners, whether the Church Commissioners have any plans to improve the levels of pay of assistant curates.

With effect from 1 April, the commissioners have introduced an improved national pay scale for assistant staff, following a resolution of the General Synod in 1989. The commissioners remain committed to improving the stipends of all parochial clergy as resources allow, but further progress will depend on the giving of Church members.
