HC Deb 03 June 1991 vol 192 c70W
Mr. Evennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the average wage was for an NHS nurse in 1979 and 1989.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

[holding answer 14 May 1991]Information is not collected centrally on average rates of pay. The minimum and maximum rates of basic pay received by enrolled nurses, staff nurses and sisters in 1979 and by their broadly equivalent grades in 1989 were as set out in the table.

In addition to their basic pay, nurses received additional earnings from leads and allowances. Their total earnings from these sources in 1989 were as indicated in the table. There are further additions to basic pay for nurses in the London zone and the effects of these are also shown.
