HC Deb 03 June 1991 vol 192 cc70-1W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much money per week a prisoner in a mother and baby unit receives at Her Majesty's prison at(a) Askham Grange, (b) Styal and (c) Holloway, excluding any personal money a prisoner may have accumulated.

Mrs. Rumbold

Earnings received by mothers in mother and baby units vary according to the activities in which they are involved and are set at the same levels as for prisoners elsewhere in the establishments.

At HM prison, Askham Grange, the earnings of the women at present in the unit range between £1.90 (unemployed) and £5.95 per week. At HM prison, Styal, the earnings range between £2 (light duties) and £3.80 per week. At HM prison Holloway, they range between £1.90 (unemployed, including remand inmates who are willing to work) and £4.45 per week.

In addition, mothers who apply and who meet the normal eligibility criteria receive child benefit at the appropriate rate.
