HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 c696W
Mr. Maginnis

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the number of full-time medical officers and full-time trained welfare officers for each regiment in the Army.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

There are 208 primary care medical officers' posts in the regular Army, and 179 medical officers were in post on 30 June 1991. A further 13 posts are filled by civilian medical practitioners and 16 posts are currently vacant.

The Army does not employ full-time trained welfare officers; but the commanding officer of each unit is responsible for the welfare of the men and women under his command. The unit families officer has particular responsibility for the welfare of families.
