HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 cc592-3W
Mr. Steen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department pursuant to his answer of 18 July, if he will break down the outstanding £14.851 million immigration fines between carriers registered in(a) Europe, (b) Asia, (c) the United States and Canada and (d) elsewhere.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Records of charges made under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act 1987 do not show carriers' place of registration.

Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many notices have been issued to each airline under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act 1987 in each quarter since January 1990; how much money has accrued as a result; and how many such notices have been contested by each airline.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

It is not the practice to disclose information on the record of individual airlines under the Act. The total number of notices issued to carriers—airlines and sea operators—in each quarter since January 1990 was as follows:

Quarter ending Number of notices
31 March 1990 1,912
30 June 1990 2,603
30 September 1990 3,656
31 December 1990 3,351
31 March 1991 2,843
30 June 1991 2,759

A total of £8.017 million was received during this period, and representations were made by carriers in 4,967 cases.
