§ Mr. CousinsTo ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on the reasons for the rise in provision for central and miscellaneous services outlined in table A of Cm. 1504; and what part publicity costs play in this rise.
§ Mr. LilleyThe increase in central and miscellaneous services shown in table A of Cm. 1504 derives from several alterations since 1985–86 in the Department's vote structure and the progressive inclusion within this category of all the Department's gross running costs. Prior710W to 1990–91 running costs for general industrial research and development, international trade, standards, space and regulation of trade were borne elsewhere on the vote. Central publicity costs did not form part of this programme until 1990–91 and the decrease between voted central publicity provision from that year to this financial year is 28 per cent.
