HC Deb 09 July 1991 vol 194 cc304-8W
Mr. Paice

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in rank order the amount spent by each local education authority on special needs(a) as an amount per pupil-student and (b) as a proportion of total local education authority expenditure on education.

Mr. Fallon

Returns from local education authorities identify separately their expenditure on special schools, home and hospital tuition, child guidance and educational psychological services. However, those returns do not show separately the amount spent to meet the special needs of pupils in primary and secondary schools and of further education students.

For 1988–89, the latest year for which information on actual spending is available, table 1 indicates spending on those items which are separately indentified as an amount per pupil in special schools. Table 2 indicates that spending as a proportion of total local education authority expenditure on education.
