HC Deb 09 July 1991 vol 194 c321W
Mr. Fry

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his consideration of the gaming board's recommendation of the relaxation of regulations on the advertising of bingo.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

We have recently completed our consideration of the gaming board's advice on the scope for partial relaxation of the controls, in section 42 of the Gaming Act 1968, on the advertising of licensed bingo clubs. We have concluded that there is a case for relaxing the controls on print advertising, provided there is a prohibition on all advertising of prizes away from club premises so as to prevent undue emphasis being placed on the gambling rather than the social aspects of the clubs. We do not believe that bingo advertising on local radio should be permitted. We will be writing to the Bingo Association of Great Britain in the near future to invite their views on these proposals.
