§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what discussions he has had with the Office of Telecommunications about the establishment of a compensation scheme in respect of recorded premium telephone services.
§ Mr. RedwoodThe issue of compensation schemes in respect of premium rate telephone services was considered by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in 1989. Its report recommended that such a scheme should be introduced for chatlines. This scheme is now in operation and also includes other live services. It was not recommended that it should include recorded services. I have not held any recent discussions with OFTEL about extending the scheme in this way.
