What was the certified normal accommodation of prisons in England and Wales on February 1st 1991; the number of prisoners held in custody on that day; and the numbers held two and three to a cell on that day.

On Friday 1st February the certified normal accommodation of prison service establishments in England and Wales was 44,343. On that day there were 44,668 prisoners, including 604 in police cells. The numbers of prisoners held two and three to a cell are only collected on the second Sunday of each month. On Sunday 13th January, the latest date for which figures are available centrally, there were 10,702 prisoners held 2 to a cell and 2,217 held 3 to a cell.
