To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he has any plans to meet the director general of the Health and Safety Executive to discuss safety in coal mines.

Mr. Forth

No. The Health and Safety Commission published a consultative document on the management and administration of safety and health at mines in May 1989, revised in November 1990, following extensive consultations with mining unions and others.

Discussions are continuing, so it would be inappropriate for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State to be involved at this stage.
