To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what plans he has to improve training opportunities on Merseyside;

(2) if he will take steps to improve training opportunities on Merseyside in the light of the announcement that the Merseyside Council for Voluntary Services will cut by 50 per cent. its training places for adults in the coming year.

Mr. Jackson

The Merseyside TEC is expected to become fully operational in June 1991. It will be for the TEC to address the training needs of Merseyside, making use in its plans of the new range of flexibilities recently introduced for the major training, enterprise, and educational programmes.
