Mr. Turner

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will list the current members of the Policy Holders Protection Board and give the relevant experience of each member; how many of the commission are women; and what percentage of the total membership they comprise.

Mr. Redwood

The Policyholders Protection Act 1975 provides that the Policyholders Protection Board comprises five members. The Act requires that at least three members shall be directors, chief executives or managers of authorised insurance companies and at least one member shall be qualified to represent the interests of policyholders. The information requested on the current members of the board is as follows:

Colin North Smith CBE (Chairman)

Former senior partner in Peat Marwick McLintock and former chairman of the insurance sub-committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Anthony Brend

Chief executive of Commercial Union Assurance Company.

Charles O'Brien

Director of the M & G Assurance Group. Former general manager and actuary of the Royal National Pension Fund for Nurses and currently a member of its council. President of the Institute of Actuaries 1976–78.

Nigel Proddow

Former director and chief general manager of Pearl Assurance plc.

Rosemary McRobert OBE

Currently a director of the investors compensation scheme. Former deputy director of the Consumers Association and director of the Retail Trading Standards Association.

Women comprise 20 per cent. of the board's membership.
