§ Mr. Ron DaviesTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what plans the Government have to put forward proposals calling for a higher status to be given to animal welfare in the treaty of Rome in the context of the inter-governmental conference;
(2) whether he intends to support the proposal which would give a higher status to animal welfare in the treaty of Rome, tabled by the German Government in the context of the inter-governmental conference.
§ Mr. MacleanThe treaty already provides power for action to be taken on animal welfare in areas which the Government consider appropriate for Community action, notably the protection of farm animals. We will participate constructively in any discussions on proposals to give a stronger emphasis to animal welfare.
