§ Mr. John Patten[holding answer 18 April 1991]: The information requested is as follows:
§ Mrs. ChalkerAssistance to education in Nigeria in 1990–91 covered nine separate projects at a total cost last year of some £1.37 million. There is no aid currently specifically to commerce. In Ghana total education costs amounted to about £0.9 million in 1990–91, including training in Britain. In commerce, a United Kingdom training award is available in 1991 to the Ghana Export Promotion Council. These figures do not include our wide-ranging programmes of United Kingdom training in 299W other sectors amounting to a further £2.5 million for Nigeria and £1.4 million for Ghana. Both countries have better developed education systems than many others in Africa.
