HC Deb 17 April 1991 vol 189 c196W
30. Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland, pursuant to the letter of 13 March of the Minister of State, Scottish Office to the hon. Member for Linlithgow, what requests he has had from UNICEF or the World Health Organisation or other agencies for help in Kuwait or southern Iraq to fight diseases such as cholera and typhoid; and what response he has sent.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

There have been no direct requests to my right hon. Friend from any such organisations for assistance to fight disease in Kuwait and Southern Iraq. The Government support the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross and have contributed £2.5 million to its Gulf appeal. We have also contributed $1 million to the United Nations and other agencies through the United Nations Disaster Relief Organisation. The work of these organisations will include action to control diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
